NNot Television
Launched in December 2013, Not Television is a blog about cabaret, moving-image, queer and DIY culture produced by critic, programmer and filmmaker Ben Walters. Why Not Television? Ben suggests that "television is cold. It is produced industrially in adherence with market values [...] It doesn’t care what you think as long as you keep receiving. That, of course, is a slight exaggeration. Is all TV bad? No. Is all cabaret good? Of course not. Are there other forms out there that allow people to explore progressive ideas about art, self-expression and collaboration in ways that don’t revolve around making money? Hell yeah. And those are the things this blog is interested in, from new ways of exploring sexuality on screen to the latest developments at the Leake St graffiti tunnel." Cabaret is a prime focus of the blog. Between 2009 and 2013, Ben was Time Out London’s cabaret editor, a position that gave him "a ringside seat to the city’s most dynamic creative scene and unparalleled access to those shaping it". He has maintained that interest since leaving Time Out with pieces for outlets including the Guardian and Evening Standard, and by producing cabaret nights and beginning a funded PhD on socially-engaged performance. Not Television blog posts vary in length but are generally around 500 words including high quality images and sometimes videos. PR opportunities include news, reviews and interviews related to Arts and Entertainment, especially Cabaret and LGBT film and video. Ben can best be reached via the contact form on his website or on Twitter where he is active and very responsive.
