This publication is a practice- and issues-related journal directed to human service professionals (mostly social workers but also psychologists, certified marriage or family therapists, and others trained in family life education, geriatrics, and other fields for service to families and individuals). In addition to these clinicians, therapists, and counselors, the journal is directed to their supervisors and agency administrators and is read by educators and students. These professionals engage in a broad range of activities and concerns: family therapy, advocacy, family life education, public policy issues, agency administration, community education, and group, family, and individual counseling. The journal's articles deal with research and theory, direct practice, and management of direct services. Feature articles in the journal can be classified according to the following categories: Practice description, articles on how a practitioner or agency manages some kind of work; Practice reflection/analysis, articles are not specific to a practitioner or agency, but deal with work with types of clients (minorities; individual, group, family; elderly or youth; battered women; children of alcoholics) or types of practice (adoption, marital therapy, crisis intervention, advocacy, family life education); Theory, articles deal with theoretical underpinnings of practice: psychodynamic systems, existential, eclectic; Research reports, and Agency/Profession, articles deal with supervision of practitioners and management of agencies, with professional concerns of agency personnel and practitioners (staff training, burnout, certification), and with topical concerns of human services professionals in general.
