  • New York Magazine
    New York Magazine

New York Magazine covers, analyzes, comments on, and defines the culture, lifestyle, fashion and personalities that drive New York City. It was founded in April 1968 by the editor Clay Felker and the graphic designer Milton Glaser, and was among the first "lifestyle magazines" meant to appeal to both male and female audiences. Geared for an audience that is generally college-educated working professionals, its readership includes both area residents and visitors interested in keeping in touch with local lifestyles. Created to report on and interpret recent events in the New York metropolitan area, it contains news about the city as well as reporting and criticism about restaurants, the arts and entertainment, shopping and services in New York. The publication is comprised of reader letters, opinions, news, features and interviews. Editorial content is broken down as follows: The Intelligencer section features New York people, places and happenings. It includes three subsections; a quick survey of the city’s most important events is included in It Happened This Week; Party Lines is a photo page; and the Competition, which challenges readers to solve New York-specific problems such as designing a new bridge or remaking an urban health club. The Features section showcases the big stories about people, politics, business, the media, food, fashion, crime, culture, real estate, medical issues, parenting, and quality of life issues. The Strategist section is dedicated to inspiring New Yorkers to live well by providing advice in the following subsections: The Best Bet, Mating, The Look Book, Storefront, Market Research, Food, The Everything Guide, Economy of One, Map, Body, Real Estate and Travel. The Culture Pages section gives the low-down on entertainment with subsections on Movies, Theater, Music, Art, Books and TV. The Agenda section at the back of each issue provides succinct listings for things to do. Subsections include Movies, Broadway & Off-Broadway, Art Museums, Galleries, Photography, Special Events, Music & Dance, Nightlife, Readings, Lectures & Panels, Restaurants, Kids and The Word. The final page is reserved for the Artifact section, highlighting current ideas, trends or interesting information reflecting city life. The magazine's website, nymag.com features several off-shoot digital publications including The Cut, Vulture, and Science of Us.

    Esquire

Established in 1933 and designed to inform contemporary males of their changing role in modern society, Esquire editorial focuses on current events, living trends, and career evolution, with features on fashion, the arts, politics, and the media. It also provides personality profiles and interviews, literature and technology updates, and travel and dining articles. Esquire is geared toward successful and affluent men who dress themselves, have the means and knowledge to invest, can order at a fine restaurant, have a healthy respect and admiration for women, enjoy enriching vacations, and have mastered life's basics. It targets the 25-50 age group and one third of their readers are women. Topics covered include culture and humanities, apparel and accessories, amusements, national and international affairs, general interest, sports/recreation/hobbies, business and industry, travel and transportation, health and medical science, and food and nutrition. Front-of-book sections include Man At His Best, a magazine-within-a-magazine section about style and culture with regular items: The Excerpts, Entertainment, Books, Food & Drink, Desire, Opinions, Cars, The Digital Man, and The Answer Fella. Additionally, the Style section regularly features topics like shopping, grooming, culture, and fashion, while the Folio section devotes eight to ten pages on the latest looks of the season. Semiannual sections include Women We Love, a tribute to a woman on the front lines of pop culture; The Information, a visual forecast of upcoming, upmarket trends in cultural and material worlds; and The Restless Man, a guide to the world's most exotic, extravagant, and exhilarating destinations. Be aware that Esquire, unlike many magazines, doesn't feature a holiday gift guide, or special gift guides. Editors avoid fads and holiday-centered themes because these types of issues would be too repetitive. Always allow 4-6 months of lead time when pitching. For pitches regarding book reviews, the editors request a copy of the book to be sent. For product or fashion-related pitches, specific editors need to be contacted for specific topics: Grooming-related pitches go to the Fashion Assistant. Mainstream fashion items go to the Senior Fashion Editor Fashion-related story pieces should be directed to the Senior Fashion Editor or Features Editor.
