Written for sophisticated, upscale lovers of food, wine, travel and adventure. Offers articles about authentic cuisines from around the world. According to the publisher's statement, it attempts to satisfy the "hunger for genuine information about food in all its contexts. With its emphasis on heritage and tradition, home cooking, and real food, the magazine evokes the flavors of food from around the world (including forgotten pockets of culinary excellence in the United States). It celebrates the culture and environment in which dishes are created and the people who create them."
Co-founded in 1994 by Dorothy Kalins, then editor in chief of Metropolitan Home magazine, Michael Grossman, Christopher Hirsheimer, and Colman Andrews. Initially distributed by Meigher Communications, a now-defunct publishing company founded a former Time Inc. executive, Saveur was purchased by World Publications in 2000; the company later re-branded as Bonnier Corporation in 2007.
Topics covered include food and drink, recipes, travel, destinations and culture. Editorial sections include:
- Saveur Fare, informational, and thought-provoking essays and reviews
- Classic, one indisputable favorite dish from any of the world's cuisines
- Source, rare, high-quality food products and how to order them at home
- In The Saveur Kitchen, a resource and how-to guide with techniques, plus recipes
