The History Channel, which launched on January 1, 1995 as The History Channel, reveals the power and passion of history where viewers experience history personally and connect their own lives to the great lives and events of the past. In March 2008, The History Channel changed its name to History. This 24-hour national network highlights United States and world history through programming that focuses on historic places and events, as well as some discussion programs that pertain to books and academia. The network mainly airs non-fiction series, mini-series, documentaries, and movies. History reaches over 91 million homes and is seen in 76 countries and in more than 20 languages. PR professionals pitching a new show, series, documentary, or original movie should mail a written proposal along with biography and/or resume to the vice president of historical programming. History is always interested in new ideas. PR professionals should note that at the present time they do not air talk shows, game shows, infomercials, interview shows, magazine shows, or other shows that are 30 minutes in length. Parent company rebranded its name from A&E Television Network to A+E Networks in May 2011.The outlet offers RSS (Really Simple Syndication).

    A&E

    A&E is a network that brings viewers the "Art of Entertainment" through a combination of three genres: biography, documentary and drama. A&E offers a diverse mix of programming ranging from original movies, to relevant documentary specials and series including the Emmy Award-winning series Biography, to dramatic series and contemporary performances. In 2002, A&E, which uses the slogan "Escape the Ordinary," won six Emmy awards. Since A+E Networks launched in 1984, it has received 88 CableACE Awards. PR professionals are advised to send story ideas to the producer of the appropriate A&E program. Submissions for program ideas should be made by mail. A&E does not air talk shows, game shows, nature programs, infomercials, interview shows, cooking shows or magazine shows. A&E reaches over 92 million homes.     Smithsonian is the official journal published by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The first issue was published in 1970. Created to inspire fascination in highly educated, innovative readers through articles that are academic, artistic, thought-provoking and humorous. Editorial content explores lifestyles, cultures and peoples, as well as the environment, science and technology, travel and the arts. Smithsonian magazine DOES accept bylined articles/submissions. On occasion, they accept unsolicited manuscripts and proposals, most commonly for departments, particularly The Last Page.     This American Life

    This American Life is a national radio program focused on American literature and documentaries. The host often presents stories about people who have a unique perspective. The program is produced by Chicago Public Media, and distributed independently. A different theme is chosen each week and writers and performers are invited on the show to contribute to the theme. Their mission is to "document everyday life in this country." When putting the show together, the staff is looking for stories that they "truly love." The program debuted in November 1995 and in 2007 WBEZ-FM won a Peabody Award for an episode of This American Life. This American Life appeals to listeners interested in American literature, documentaries, storytelling and art. There are no specific deadlines or lead times for the program. The program does not accept press releases or submissions sent via mail. In the same spirit of the radio show, there has been a televised version of This American Life seen on Showtime. The TV show premiered Thursday, March 22, 2007. The host and a small team of radio producers and filmmakers spent six months on the road traveling the country documenting true stories that are dramatic, emotional and often funny. PR Professionals should note each episode is themed and stories should follow the themes. Each story is created to resemble the drama and personal interaction of a film, via the radio. Pitches should not exceed two pages and sent via email. They do not accept snail mail. As of July 1, 2014, PRI no longer distributes the program. The show offers a digital Podcast and a digital iPad application.
