WMAQ-TV is the NBC owned-and-operated affiliate serving the greater Chicago area. It broadcasts on channel 5. The station first started off with the call letters WNBY-TV, but when it debuted on October 8, 1948, it changed its call letters to WNBQ. Then on August 31, 1964, the station changed to its current call letters, WMAQ-TV. WMAQ-TV was the first Chicago station to air network and local programming in color. In 1956, it became the world's first all-color station by broadcasting all local live programs in color.
In 1986, WMAQ-TV became the first commercial station in Chicago to broadcast in stereo. It was also the first station to present closed captioning of all local newscasts in 1994. On June 9, 2003, WMAQ-TV became the first broadcast station in the United States to integrate its newsroom with another station, Telemundo affiliate WSNS-TV. The two stations share the same fax number and address, but have separate news teams. WMAQ-TV won five awards at the 2010 Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award, including the Prestigious Breaking News award.
