WNYC-AM is a non-commercial station owned by New York Public Radio. The format of the station is news and talk. WNYC-AM broadcasts in the New York City area at 820 AM. WNYC-AM programming is geared toward New York-area listeners, ages 18 to 64, interested in news features and general interest talk. While the station does not offer advertising, 20-second underwriting spots can be purchased for $750 during the morning and afternoon drives, $500 during midday, and $250 during the evening. Most contacts enforce a six-weeks-in-advance deadline. The station does not accept audio clips or PSAs. Send press releases via fax or mail to the attention of the news editor. WNYC was founded in 1924 as the municipal station for New York City. The station is largely funded through listener support, so listener satisfaction is clearly the priority. According to the program director, the audience, “Is looking for non-commercial sound and non-commercial information. They want information that’s objective, that’s been researched, and is not full of hyperbole.”
WNYC is “the largest public radio station in the country,” says the program director, "by many measures." WNYC-AM and WNYC-FM produce local programming especially directed to New Yorkers, as well as programs that are broadcast across the United States, and even some programming that is available around the world.
“We are a little unusual in the public radio system in that we create more original programming than most stations do,” the program director adds.
The outlet offers RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and a digital Podcast.
